Used 2015 Toyota RAV4 at Thompson Toyota for Edgewood, MD

For 2015, the Toyota RAV4 is essentially unchanged save for a couple of new options and features. Specifically, there is a new Blizzard Pearl appearance package for the Limited, while the XLE picks up new wheels and the option of a power liftgate. Toyota has also revised the RAV4's frontal structure this year to improve the vehicle's score in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety small-overlap frontal-offset crash test. Its combination of features, passenger space and everyday utility warrant a closer look if you're shopping for a small crossover.

Under the RAV4's Hood

The 2015 Toyota RAV4 is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 176 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard, and all versions of the RAV4 are available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Coupled with the standard 6-speed automatic transmission, it's enough to get the SUV from a standstill to 60 mph in a little less than 10 seconds. The standard front-wheel drive (FWD) can be replaced with an all-wheel drive system, and the RAV4 will tow up to 1,500 lbs.

Around town, the Toyota RAV4 impresses with its ability soak up bumps and imperfections while delivering a reasonable amount of road feel. The electric steering rack is reasonably responsive and accurate, and the brakes are nothing short of terrific in terms of feel, modulation, and response. While the RAV4 expresses eagerness to turn into corners, if you take it up on the suggestion, it doesn't hesitate to remind you that certain laws of physics ultimately govern SUV handling.

Design of Toyota RAV4

The looks of the 2015 RAV4 are fantastic, and its sharp lines are positively aggressive compared to previous models. Owners of those older models may notice that there's no rear-mounted spare tire on the current generation. However, despite it being a fixture since the RAV4's introduction, Toyota was smart in dropping it, since it allows for a swing-up rear door instead of the swing-out design on previous versions, making it easier to load the cargo area with groceries, or whichever else you have.

A power assist is standard on Limited models, and available on XLE models for 2015. With high-quality plastics and soft-touch surfaces, the 2015 Toyota RAV4 offers a comfortable and inviting SUV interior. Base LE models get contrasting colors, adding an upscale look at a price level that usually sentences the buyer to blandness. However, we're not fans of the faux carbon-fiber cladding around the doorsills and gearshift lever. Interestingly, leather isn't available, substituted with something called Softex, which does a pretty good impression of the real thing. The driver's seat is comfortable and supportive, especially the Limited model with its added lumbar support. Rear-seat passengers have good legroom, and there's plenty of cargo space.
